Starting August 24th, all new audio/visual (A/V) items will be reservable by phone (first come, first serve basis) for West Hempstead Library cardholders only. These items include DVDs, Blu-rays, and Video Games and must be picked up on the same day they are requested. Call us at (516) 481-6591 ext 21 to reserve these items.

Click here for a list of our newest A/V.

All NEW A/V items must be returned to West Hempstead Public Library only.

A/V items are quarantined for 4 days. DO NOT PANIC if you see an $8 fine on your record for these items. Once out of quarantine, these fines will be deleted. However, if A/V is returned late, the $2-per-day fine still applies. Keep your receipt handy to keep track of due dates!

Please Note: All “NEW 2 DAY” DVDs & Blu-rays checked out prior to quarantine must be returned before placing a reserve. A/V items cannot be renewed.

Three steps to picking up materials:

  • Search our catalog for items that are currently available. (Note: There is no inter-library loan delivery service available at this time.)
  • Holds must be placed prior to scheduling pickup. There are three ways to do this:
    • Place the hold yourself within our online catalog.
    • Email [email protected] with your name, library card number, and the title, author, and format (e.g., Large Print, audiobook, etc.) of the items you want to be held.
    • Call 516-481-6591 ext. 21 and we will place the holds for you.
  • Pickups are scheduled Monday through Friday in 15-minute time slots.
  • When your hold is ready you will receive an email or phone call, depending on which notice preference you have in your record, to schedule a pickup appointment. Please update your account with a current email address and phone number.
  • If holds are not picked up within five days the items will go to the next person in line or back on the shelf. (Note: If there are no time slots available to pick up your hold within 5 days we will extend the hold until time slots are available.)
  • Call 516-481-6591 ext. 21 or email [email protected] for any questions or to modify/cancel your pickup appointment.
  • Arrive at the library at your scheduled time.
  • Only one member of your household may enter the lobby to pick up your holds. Patrons and staff MUST wear masks at all times. We exercise the right to refuse service if patrons are not wearing a mask.
  • Your items will be checked out to you in advance and placed in a bag on our lobby pickup table for when you arrive. Bags are labeled by your last name, first initial. A receipt with due dates will be inside the bag.
  • Follow social distancing guidelines while waiting to pick up your items. Stay at least 6 feet away from other people, and avoid gathering in groups.

Due Dates and Returns

All items will be checked out for a 28-day loan period.

All returns of lobby pickup items, as well as anything else outstanding on your account, must be put in the book drops in front of the library. No items will be accepted inside the building.
